Film Discussion: 50 Years of Organic Gardening

  • Yardley Friends Meeting 65 North Main Street Yardley, PA 19067 (map)

Yardley Friends Meeting will host the documentary Organic Roots on Friday, November 18 at 7:00 PM at 65 N. Main Street in Yardley, Pennsylvania. Join director Al Johnson for a showing of this film followed by a discussion of the last 50 years of this movement.

Organic foods are part of our life today and a tool in our concern for global warming.  How did it start? Today many of us buy foods that are certified organic.  We are concerned about our health and what we consume. The concern for protecting the earth is serious. We don’t want chemicals to deplete the soil and harm the air we breathe.  Global warming is showing up faster than we thought.

Young people have faith they and their offspring have many years ahead of them.  Caring for themselves and the planet matters to them more than most anything.

Fifty years ago, just like today, many young people felt the need to care about planet earth and live accordingly. Opposing the Vietnam War, nuclear power and Southern voter suppression, some began to focus on healthy food and the environment. “Back-to-the-landers” used this energy to give birth to the organic farming movement in the northeast.

The idea wasn’t mainstream.  Unfortunately it took until recently for this to receive the attention it deserves. Today these changes are embraced by many. Shopping at local farms and farmers markets helps us have a better food experience, healthier choices, and a sense of community.

This movie traces back to the beginning and how it has become main stream and how certified organic started. Anyone interested in eating healthy, gardening, saving the earth, or tracing the older days will appreciate this movie.
