Honoring the Trees

This fall, Buckingham Friends School, which shares a campus with Buckingham Friends Meeting, broke ground on the largest construction project in its history. Part of that expansion includes the removal of some large trees to make room for the new additions.

So, Buckingham Meeting celebrated the life and support of the trees that will be taken down with the building and renovations of their school this Fall with a tree-hugging ceremony.

Friends gathered, encircling the oak between the auditorium and gym, and held hands. Led in a prayer of gratitude by their own Jane Amon who gave thanks for all the shade, oxygen, recycling of carbon dioxide and support of our children who came to play under its boughs, and who shared their joys and sorrows in its branches.

She led us through the mysterious beginnings of all living creatures; thankful for how we come to be where we each are, maybe a squirrel planted the acorn that birthed the majestic oak that brought us such beauty and health.

It was a lovely way to give thanks for the gifts we have been given; God’s blessing was deeply felt.
