Yardley Friends’ Flea Market is a Success
On Saturday, September 9th Yardley Friends Meeting had its 67th annual Flea Market. Weather reports were iffy. We decided to go for it and it didn’t rain until a couple hours after the Flea Market ended. It was a little too warm, but a good day was had by all! It’s been said that the Flea Market is about outreach and inreach. Seeing many of us that don’t come to worship during the year is a great joy. It would be great if they came more often. Many of the young children that grew up in the meeting are young adults. They pitched in. That made many jobs easier and more joyful.
Vendors made money and were happy. Visitors could find out more about Quakerism at the Quaker tent or asking any of us. The band, Fools and Prophets, livened up the whole day. It’s a day the surrounding community gets to enjoy our beautiful space and all we share. At least one guest at the Flea Market attended Meeting the next day.
The original Flea Market was around the time the Meeting moved from a spot in town to the newly built meetinghouse we enjoy today. Many of us were lucky enough to know some of the Friends who helped build this Meeting. Members did a lot of work associated with building the Meetinghouse. When talking to Betsy Cadwallader, she said how glad her Aunt Laura and Carol and Sid, her parents, would be that we are carrying on the tradition. They were a great inspiration to those who were lucky enough to know them. They created a Meeting that has been so special to us all. I’m glad we can continue what they started.
