Bucks Quarter May Quarterly Meeting

Join Bucks Quarter Quakers for their May Quarterly Meeting, being held on Zoom on Sunday, May 15, 2022, under the care of Doylestown Friends Meeting.

The day will begin at 9:45 am in the Zoom room, where Friends will have an opportunity to have a casual chat with others from around the Quarter.

The days events will begin at 10:00 am with a program entitled Peace Assertions in a Global Quaker Context. Presented by Gretchen Castle, Dean of Earlham School of Religion and former General Secretary of Friends World Committee World Office in London, she will speak about the Quaker context of peacebuilding, beginning with some historical background and moving to a more contemporary look at where Quakers are doing peace work.

It will include discussion of the Quaker United Nations Office, work of Quaker organizations such as the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Britain Yearly Meeting’s Quaker Peace and Social Witness (QPSW), the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) and its European counterpart Quaker Council on European Affairs (QCEA), and several African peace organizations and its impact on other parts of the Quaker world. Peace work today may include climate justice, economic justice, racial justice, and gender justice. Since COVID, peace building and justice issues have become more integrated.

With an MEd in Adult Organizational Learning (Organization Development) from Temple University, Gretchen has experience in board development, leadership development, strategic planning, and organizational planning. She served as presiding clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and has worked or volunteered in various capacities for Friends General Conference, Friends Services for the Aging, the American Friends Service Committee, and Doylestown Friends Meeting where she holds her membership.   As Dean of the Earlham School of Religion and a graduate of Earlham College, Gretchen has returned to her Quaker roots in Richmond, IN. For those in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Gretchen might be remembered for her twenty years of singing with Faith and Practice, a folk band with the tag line “when good Quakers go bad.”

After a short lunch break we will gather for Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business, where we will receive annual reports from Bristol, Buckingham, Fallsington and Lehigh Valley Meetings, as well as the annual report from the Oversight Committee and Chandler Hall/Kendal. The final draft of the 2022-23 budget will also be presented for approval.
