Newtown Monthly Meeting owes its origin to Edward Hicks,
primitive artist, who in 1815 gathered nearby Friends to meeting in the
empty Court House. In 1817 the main part of the meetinghouse was built,
a plain, oblong structure of stone and stucco. It now houses a permanent
display of Edward Hicks' paintings.
